About the Nutrients:
Arginine is an essential amino acid in the cat. It helps to detoxify ammonia. Diets deficient in arginine along with other amino acids predispose the cat to developing hyperammonemia. Arginine is also involved in the formation of nitric acid which is used by the body to help regulate blood pressure.
Artichoke (Cynara scolymnus) Leaf Extract has been shown to support liver detoxification and normalize liver metabolism. It contains Cynarin, a compound that promotes the production of bile. It also has antioxidant qualities.
Betaine or TMG is a lipotropic (fat metabolizer) agent that promotes healthy fat metabolism in the liver and supports the production of SAMe which is an important co-factor for liver function and for transmethyation reactions.
Choline is a lipotropic agent (fat emulsifier) and is important for the processing of fats and regulation of the gall bladder. A deficiency may result in fatty build-up in the liver.
Carnitine is necessary for the transport of fatty acids into hepatic mitochondria for oxidation. It is speculated that a relative deficiency may contribute to hepatic lipidosis in the cat.
DMG (Dimethylglycine) provides useful building blocks or methyl groups that support the production of SAMe and glutathione. It also supports the immune system and aids in detoxification.
Folic Acid supports methylation pathway and is required for the phase one detoxification pathway in the liver and for cell repair and division.
Gluta-Syn Whey Protein Isolate supports the production of glutathione and detoxification of the liver.
Milk Thistle to support glutathione levels and liver detoxification.
Taurine is an essential amino acid for the cat and is required for normal bile acid metabolism. It is used for bile acid conjugation. Prolonged anorexia can decrease taurine levels in cats.
Turmeric supports liver and gall bladder function by stimulating the flow of bile and provides antioxidant support.
B Vitamins (B1, B2, B6 and B12) are necessary for intermediary liver metabolism. For example, B6 and B12 are required for the remethylation of methionine. A deficiency can contribute to fatty liver.
Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin. Low plasma levels of Vitamin A have been shown to be low in poor functioning livers.
Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that protects fats from damage. It is needed in those with a ‘fatty liver’, where there is an accumulation of unhealthy oxidized fats in the liver cells.
Vitamin K2 is required for hepatic synthesis of clotting factors II, VII, IX and X. Chronic cholestatic liver disease results in a bile acid deficiency which prevents absorption of Vitamin K from the intestine. Coagulation disorders occur in animals with severe liver disease.
Zinc Carnosine supports the immune system and is a powerful antioxidant.
