Urocit-K 5mEq (540 mg)
Potassium Citrate
Potassium Citrate is used as an aid in the prevention of urinary stone formation
by increasing urinary pH. Alkalinizing the urine pH reduces the formation of kidney stones (calcium oxalate bladder stones) that would normally occur due to high levels of calcium or uric acid in the urine. Potassium citrate is a prescription medication
available as controlled release tablets and granules.
Side effects:
Side effects of potassium citrate include the development of hyperkalemia with
symptoms such as muscle weakness, vomiting, diarrhea and heart arrhythmias.
Precautions:
Do not use in animals with hyperkalemia, kidney failure, Addison's disease or
dehydration. Use with caution when given with ACE inhibitors such as enalapril,
diuretics such as furosemide, NSAIDs such as carprophen or aspirin.
Dosage and Administration:
Potassium citrate is FDA approved for use in dogs and cats. The dose varies with
the product used and the disease being treated. Consult your veterinarian. This
medication should be given with food.
