Phenylbutazone Powder

Phenylbutazone Powder For Horses is for the relief of inflammatory conditions associated with the musculoskeletal system. Phenylbutazone is an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) used to treat and manage pain associated with joints, muscles and bones. This highly palatable citrus-flavored powder is easily top-dressed on the horse’s ration.

Dosage and Administration:
For horses only. Administer orally (using the 0.6 ounce (18 mL) scoop provided) on a small amount of palatable feed and mix well. Give 1 to 2 level scoops per 500 pounds of body weight, but do not exceed 4 scoops per animal daily. Use the high dose for the first 48 hours, then gradually reduce to a maintenance dose. One level scoop delivers 10 grams of powder containing 1 gram of phenylbutazone.

How Supplied:
Phenylbutazone Powder is supplied in 1.1 lb (0.5 kg) jars and 2.2 lb (1 kg) jars each containing a dispensing scoop. One level scoop (10 grams of powder) contains 1 gram of phenylbutazone.

Each 1.1 lb tub contains: 50 grams of phenylbutazone.
Each 2.2 tub contains: 100 grams of phenylbutazone.

Guidelines to Successful Therapy:
1. Use a relatively high dose for the first 48 hours, then reduce gradually to maintenance dose. Maintain the lowest dose capable of producing the desired clinical response.

2. Response to Phenylbutazone therapy is prompt, usually occurring within 24 hours. If no significant clinical response is evident after five (5) days, re-evaluate the diagnosis and the therapeutic approach.

3. Many chronic conditions will respond to Phenylbutazone therapy, but discontinuance of treatment may result in recurrence of symptoms.

Contraindication: Use with caution in patients who have a history of drug allergy.

Caution: Stop medication at the first sign of gastro-intestinal upset, jaundice, or blood dyscrasia. Authenticated cases of agranulocytosis associated with the drug have occurred in man. Fatal reactions, although rare, have been reported in dogs after long-term therapy. To guard against this possibility, conduct routine blood counts at weekly intervals during the early phase of therapy and at intervals of two (2) weeks thereafter. Any significant fall in the total white count, relative decrease in granulocytes, or black or tarry stools, should be regarded as a signal for immediate cessation of therapy and institution of appropriate counter measures.

In the treatment of inflammatory conditions associated with infectious, specific anti-infective therapy is required.

Not for use in horses intended for food.
