Melatonin
Melatonin is a hormone normally produced by the body that aids in the regulation of reproduction, mood and circadian (sleep-wake) cycles in people and animals. Production of melatonin is stimulated by darkness and inhibited by light. When Melatonin is given as a dietary supplement, it decreases the latency period to sleep, but does not affect total wake time or duration of sleep. Melatonin is commonly given to pets in the management of anxiety and stress.
Melatonin tablets can aid in short-term modulation of the circadian rhythm in people. It also has antioxidant effects that has demonstrated improved oxidative status in select diseases and syndromes in people.
Indications for Melatonin use in animals:
- Management of night pacing and alteration of sleep-wake cycles
- Management of phobias, anxiety and stress in pets
- Dogs: Used to treat non-itchy, non-pruritic alopecia skin conditions such as alopecia X and follicular dysplasia. Melatonin is also given to stimulate platelet production in immune-mediated thrombocytopenia.
- Cats: Suppression of estrus
- Horses: Alteration of the seasonal clock in horses demonstrating seasonal head-shaking
- Ferrets: To lessen the clinical signs of adrenocortical disease
- Sheep: Improved reproductive performance and ovulation rates
Consult your veterinarian on the administration and use of Melatonin for your pet.
