Antioxidants such as Vitamin C may reduce the possibility of cell damage due to increased free radical production during times of illness, physical or environmental stress. Also commonly given to older horses.
As an antioxidant, Vitamin C works with Vitamin A and Vitamin E to protect tissues of the body, especially those of the respiratory system. Vitamin C is also important in the production of connective tissues found in tendons, ligaments, skin, hooves, bones and teeth. Vitamin C is normally made in the liver from glucose. Body levels of Vitamin C are found to be depressed during times of illness, stress, endurance exercises and in older horses. Horses in undergoing these conditions may benefit from Vitamin C supplementation.
