Bronchodilator
Aminophylline is frequently prescribed for
dogs and cats suffering from asthma or bronchitis. It belongs to a
class of drugs called bronchodilators, used to relax the smooth muscle wall
in the airway and allowing unrestricted air passage and easier breathing. Aminophylline is also used in the treatment of heart failure and pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs).
Dosage:
Aminophylline is available in tablets, oral liquid, injection and suppository form.
Dog: 10 mg/kg orally every 8 hours
Cat: 6.6 mg/kg orally every 12 hours
Use with caution in animals with cardiac arrhythmias and animals prone to
seizures. Side effects, however, appear more common in humans than
animals. Side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, anxiety or
nervousness, insomnia, increased hunger or thirst and urination. Side
effects may subside with continued therapy or may require dosage
adjustments.
