Aminophylline is frequently prescribed for dogs and cats suffering from asthma or bronchitis. It belongs to a class of drugs called bronchodilators, used to relax the smooth muscle wall in the airway and allowing unrestricted air passage and easier breathing. Aminophylline is also used in the treatment of heart failure and pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs).
Dosage:
Aminophylline is available in tablets, oral liquid, injection and suppository form.
Dog: 10 mg/kg orally every 8 hours Cat: 6.6 mg/kg orally every 12 hours
Dog: 10 mg/kg orally every 8 hours
Cat: 6.6 mg/kg orally every 12 hours
Use with caution in animals with cardiac arrhythmias and animals prone to seizures. Side effects, however, appear more common in humans than animals. Side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, anxiety or nervousness, insomnia, increased hunger or thirst and urination. Side effects may subside with continued therapy or may require dosage adjustments.
