Prevents Heartworm Diseases in dogs
and cats.
Interceptor (milbemycin oxime) Flavor Tabs, also known
as
Sentinel Flavor Tabs
when combined with
Program, are chewable
tablets that are used to prevent heartworm
disease (Dirofilaria immitis), as well as
subdue or quell the growth of whipworms,
hookworms, and roundworms. They are
administered orally once a month, preferably on
the same date 1 month into the transmission
season and should continue until 1 dose after
the end of the season. In regions where
heartworm transmission is not seasonal
Interceptor is given throughout the year.
Canines which live within heartworm-free
regions and will be traveling to heartworm risk
areas should be treated within 1 month of the
beginning of the exposure to the area. If it is
required administrations should be repeated
monthly until one administration after the end
of the exposure risk. If Interceptor replaces
another preventative heartworm medication the
initial dose should be given within one month
after the previous treatment. The tablets
should be given directly into the dogs mouth or
they can put into food.
Side Effects.
As with similar heartworm
preventatives, pets have to be tested for
heartworms before using Interceptor
Flavor Tabs. In a small number of treated
dogs, digestive and neurological side effects
can occur. In cats, safety studies at up to
ten
times the allowed dose did not detect any adverse
drug reactions.
Method Of Action.
Interceptor Flavor Tabs
eliminate the tissue stage of
heartworm larvae and the adult stage
of hookworm , roundworms and
whipworm infestations
when administered orally according to the
recommended dosage schedule. The anthelmintic
activity of milbemycin oxime is
thought to be
a result of interference with invertebrate
neurotransmission.
Removes and controls adult Roundworms
and Whipworms.
Interceptor has been tested safely in
than seventy different breeds of dogs, including
collies, gestating females, breeding
females and males, and puppies
beyond two weeks. In
well-controlled clinical field studies, 786
dogs were able to complete treatment with
milbemycin oxime.
Milbemycin oxime was safely used in animals
receiving frequently used veterinary products
such as vaccines, anthelmintics, antibiotics,
steroids, flea collars, shampoos and dips.
Prevents flea populations in dogs and
puppies.
A rising-dose safety study conducted
in rough-coated collies manifested a
clinical reaction consisting of
ataxia, pyrexia and recurring recumbency
in 1 out of 14 dogs
treated with milbemycin oxime at 12.5 mg/kg
(25X monthly use rate). Prior to receiving the
12.5 mg/kg dose (25X monthly use rate) on day
56 of the study, all animals had
underwent an
exaggerated dosing regimen consisting of 2.5
mg/kg milbemycin oxime (5X monthly use rate) on
day 0, followed by 5.0 mg/kg (10X monthly use
rate) on day 14 and 10.0 mg/kg (20X monthly use
rate) on day 32. No adverse reactions were
observed in any of the collies when treated with
this regimen up through the 10.0 mg/kg (20X
monthly use rate) dose.
Interceptor Flavor Tabs are available in four
tablet sizes, formulated
according to the dogs weight. Each tablet
size is available in color-coded packages of 6
or 12 tablets each, which are packaged 10 per
carton.
